How to measure your head for a cowboy hat
- Take a soft tapeA sewing tape measure works best. No tape? Use a string and measure it against a ruler.
- Wrap it around your headPlace it about 1/8 inch above the ears and across the middle of the forehead, where the hat will sit.
- Keep it snug, not tightLeave room for one finger. Measure twice and keep the larger number.
- Match it to the chartRead your size below. Between two sizes, go for the larger one and adjust the inner cord.

How our hats fit
Most of our cowboy hats are one size, 56 to 58 cm (22 to 22 7/8 in). A cord inside the crown lets you tighten the hat for heads from about 54 cm or loosen it up to 59 cm. Larger heads can pick a model marked 60 to 62 cm, shown at the top of the product page.
Signs of a good fit
- The hat sits level, about one finger above the eyebrows.
- It stays on when you nod or turn your head, and in a light wind.
- It leaves no red mark on your forehead after an hour.
- Too loose? Tighten the inner cord. Too tight? Loosen it fully before trying again.
Kids and larger heads
Kids hats are about 54 cm and are marked on the product page. Teens often fit our adult one-size hats with the cord tightened. For heads above 59 cm, look for the 60 to 62 cm size in our felt and leather cowboy hats.
Sizing questions
What size cowboy hat do I need?
Measure around your head just above the ears. Between 54 and 59 cm, our one-size hats fit once you adjust the inner cord. Above 59 cm, choose a 60 to 62 cm hat.
What is the average cowboy hat size?
Most adults measure between 56 and 58 cm, which is a US hat size of about 7 to 7 1/4.
Should a cowboy hat be tight or loose?
Snug but comfortable. It should stay on in a light wind without pressing on your forehead.
What if the hat does not fit?
Adjust the cord first. If it still does not fit, you have 14 days after delivery to return it unworn.
