A cowboy hat looks great when three things line up: the right size, the right angle and an outfit that does not fight it. This guide covers all three, for men and women, whether you are heading to a rodeo, a country concert or just want a western hat for everyday wear.

How a cowboy hat should fit
A good fit is snug but not tight. The hat should sit about one finger above your eyebrows and just above the tops of your ears, with even pressure all around the head. If it leaves a red line on your forehead after ten minutes, it is too small. If it moves when you nod or turn your head quickly, it is too big.
To find your size, wrap a soft tape measure around your head just above the ears and across the middle of the forehead, then compare the number with our cowboy hat size guide. Most of our hats are one size, 56 to 58 cm, with an adjustable cord inside the crown, which makes small corrections easy. A thin foam strip under the sweatband also works if a hat is slightly loose.
How to angle a cowboy hat
Wear it level, or tilted very slightly forward. A level hat looks confident and classic, and it is the safe choice for most faces. Tilting it a little forward shades the eyes and gives a more rugged look. Pushing it far back on the head reads casual, almost relaxed, and works better for a concert than for a wedding.
Match the hat to your face
- Round face: a taller crown and a medium brim add length.
- Long face: a lower crown and a wider brim balance the proportions.
- Square face: a rounded crown and a curved brim soften strong lines.
- Small frame: avoid very wide brims, which can swallow the face.

What to wear with a cowboy hat (men)
The easiest rule: keep the rest of the outfit simple and let the hat be the statement. Dark jeans, a plain or denim shirt, a leather belt and boots always work. A black or dark brown felt hat pairs with almost anything, while a straw hat suits light shirts, chinos and warm weather.
- Everyday: straight jeans, white tee or chambray shirt, brown boots, a tan or brown hat. Browse our men’s cowboy hats.
- Night out: black jeans, dark shirt, black boots, a black felt hat.
- Summer and outdoors: linen or short sleeve shirt with a straw cowboy hat for shade and airflow.
What to wear with a cowgirl hat (women)
Cowgirl hats are more flexible. A neutral felt hat goes with a midi dress and ankle boots, a denim jacket and jeans, or a knit sweater in autumn. Brighter hats, sequins or rhinestones are perfect for festivals, bachelorette parties and concerts, where the hat is part of the fun.
- Casual: jeans, fitted top, suede jacket, brown or tan hat.
- Concert or festival: denim shorts or a flowy dress, boots and a pink, white or glitter hat.
- Winter: long coat, knit and a black or brown felt hat.

Which cowboy hat for which occasion
| Occasion | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Rodeo, ranch, outdoor event | Felt in cool weather, straw in heat | Comfort and shade for long hours |
| Country concert | Black felt, or a colorful cowgirl hat | Classic look or a fun statement |
| Wedding | Clean felt hat, neutral color | Formal, no distracting trims |
| Beach or summer trip | Light straw | Breathable and light |
| Bachelorette or party | Party cowboy hats | Matching colors for the group |
Cowboy hat etiquette
Traditional manners still follow the hat. Many people take it off indoors at the dinner table, in places of worship and during the national anthem. When you take it off, set it upside down on its crown so the brim keeps its shape. Pick it up by the brim, not by pinching the crown, which wears out the shape over time.
Quick answers
Should a cowboy hat touch your ears?
It should sit just above them. If the hat pushes your ears down, it is too big or worn too low.
Can you wear a cowboy hat if you are not a cowboy?
Yes. Western hats are worn everywhere today, from cities to festivals. Choose a simple shape and color if you want it to look natural.
