Types of cowboy hats

The crown shape sets the character of a hat. Here are the four styles you will see most, and who they suit.

Cattleman

The classic. A tall crown with a center crease and two side dents, paired with a medium brim. Works on the ranch and in town.

Pinch front

A teardrop crown pinched at the front. Slightly more relaxed, easy to wear every day, and a favorite for women's hats.

Gambler

A flat, low crown and a flat brim. A sharper, old West look that stands out at weddings and events.

Open road

A short brim and an oval crown. The most understated western shape, made for driving and city wear.

Find your cowboy hat size

Wrap a soft tape around your head, just above the ears and eyebrows, then match the number below.

Head (cm)Head (in)How it fits
54 to 5521 1/4 to 21 5/8Fits, tighten the inner cord
56 to 5822 to 22 7/8Perfect fit, one size
5923 1/4Fits, loosen the inner cord
60 to 6223 5/8 to 24 3/8Take the 60-62 cm version when offered

One size fits most: the cord inside the crown tightens or loosens the fit.

How to measure your head for a cowboy hat

How to care for your cowboy hat

Four habits that keep a good hat in shape for years.

  1. Store it on its crown

Rest your hat upside down on the crown, or on a hook. Never lay it flat on the brim, which flattens the shape.

  2. Brush felt counter-clockwise

Use a soft brush and follow the nap, moving counter-clockwise around the crown to lift dust.

  3. Let it dry naturally

Caught in the rain? Shake it off, turn the sweatband out and let it dry at room temperature, away from heat.

  4. Reshape with steam

If the brim loses its line, a little steam from a kettle lets you reshape it by hand.

The cowboy hat buying guide

Start with where you will wear it

A cowboy hat for ranch work needs a wider brim and a material that handles sun and dust. For town, concerts and weddings, a cleaner shape and a slightly shorter brim look sharper and are easier to wear indoors.

Choose the material for the season

Felt cowboy hats are the fall and winter standard. Straw cowboy hats take over when the temperature climbs. Leather sits in between and can be worn all year, which makes it a good first hat.

Pick a crown that suits your face

Longer faces balance well with a lower crown such as the gambler. Rounder faces suit a taller cattleman or pinch front crown, which adds height. Not sure? The cattleman works for almost everyone.

Get the size right the first time

Measure your head and compare it to our cowboy hat size chart. A hat that fits sits level and stays put in the wind without leaving a mark on your forehead.

Cowboy hat questions

Still unsure? Write to us and a real person answers by email.

How do I find my cowboy hat size?

Most of our hats are one size, 56 to 58 cm (22 to 22 7/8 in), with an adjustable cord inside the crown. Measure around your head just above the ears: from 54 to 59 cm the hat fits once you adjust the cord. Above 59 cm, choose the 60-62 cm version when the hat offers it.

Felt or straw: which cowboy hat should I buy?

Felt is warmer and holds its shape from fall to spring. Straw is lighter and breathes in the heat, so it is the summer choice.

What is the most popular cowboy hat shape?

The cattleman, with its center crease and two side dents. It suits most faces and most occasions.

How long does delivery take?

Orders are prepared in 1 to 3 business days, then delivered in 7 to 10 business days with tracking.

Can I return or exchange my hat?

Yes. You have 14 days after delivery to return or exchange an unworn hat in its original condition.

How should a cowboy hat fit?

It should sit level, about a finger above your eyebrows, snug without pressing on your temples.
